Welcome to the Saxon Scooter Club, York. The Saxon Scooter Club was born in 1979 in Leeds. It was Pete Flynn and Drakey both of Gemini SC that came up with the idea.

Pete became the number one of the club and started to recruit members, mainly from the terraces of Elland Road in the form of the notorious ‘Leeds Service Crew’ and in the rough working class suburbs of South Leeds. These lads were genuine scooterists though, it just made sense for them to attend the Scooter Rallies when the football season had finished.

The weekly meetings were held in ‘The Wellington’ pub in Hunslet and also meetings took place on a Saturday (usually before or after the football) at ‘The Whip’ in the city centre. Hell’s Angels, the ‘Blue Angels’ and the Leeds NF also met there.

It didn’t take long for the Saxons to gain notoriety on the rallies, they attended virtually all the runs in the late seventies and early eighties including the high profile, Keswick, Bridlington (the battle of Bridlington), Scarborough and Brighton. It was at Bridlington where they famously fought with the 'Satan Slaves' - and held their own magnificently.

Not long after the formation in Leeds, the Saxons were approached by Mick ‘Mad Dog’ Leaf of York, who after becoming increasingly disillusioned by the scene in his own city, joined their ranks.

Mick soon gathered his own flock of followers in York, who were put through stringent ‘tests’ to enrol in the new club; the York Saxons.

The Leeds and York Saxons used to meet regularly and attend the rallies together.

Unfortunately, after only a few years the York club faded away. The reason for this being the incarceration of the majority of its members in Her Majesty’s Holiday Camps up and down the country. Mick carried on riding with the Leeds Saxons.

The Leeds lads remained strong and had created an allegiance with both the Airedale SC, also from Leeds and the Red Lion (lime green helmets) from Heckmondwyke.

By the mid eighties another group from York had emerged and managed to organise a meeting with both Mick Leaf and Pete Flynn. Soon afterwards, this bunch of mavericks became the new York Saxons, with Mick once again, at the helm.

The conglomerate that had become four Yorkshire clubs was now at its most powerful. Every scooter club in the UK, bar none, knew of them.

Unfortunately, history repeated itself and a significant amount of the Saxon membership were again, incarcerated. High profile members were given lengthy jail sentences, including both Mick Leaf and Pete Flynn. By the time the nineties had arrived, the Saxons were almost none existent.

The nineties in general were a very quiet time in terms of scooter rallies. People were getting married, having kids, buying houses, etc. However, it comes as no surprise that with the new millennia, things have evolved into a new era in scootering with many of the old ‘faces’ returning.

The York Saxons are back, with four of its original membership of nearly Thirty years ago. This is the third coming,....watch this space!!
